Skip hire Guide and Advice

If you're new to hiring a skip or just looking for some guidance, we've put together a skip hire guide to answer a few of the most frequently asked questions.

BOOK A SKIP

What can I put in a skip?

You can hire a skip to dispose of construction, garden, household, office waste and more. However, you cannot dispose of the following items:

  • Asbestos
  • Batteries
  • Electrical equipment and appliances
  • Explosives
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Fridges, freezers and white appliances
  • Gas canisters and bottles
  • Hazardous materials
  • Liquids
  • Oils and fuels
  • Paint
  • Perishable waste
  • Toxic waste
  • Tyres
  • Televisions and computer screens

Trying to dispose of prohibited items is forbidden and extra charges may occur as well as having the items returned to you.

If hiring a specific skip, for example inert only, and different waste is found there will be an additional charge.

Please be aware that by keeping your skip in an area exposed to the public, some people could dispose of their own waste. It is up to you to be observant if this occurs as any waste disposed of is your responsibility.

What size skip do I need?

The main factors to consider when it comes to the size of skip you'll need to hire are:

  • How much waste do you need to dispose of?
  • How much space do you have to place the skip?

It is important to consider both of these factors as you don't want to be overpaying for a larger skip you only half fill, similarly, you don't want to hire too small of a skip and leave your project half finished.

Working out where you would like your skip hire to be dropped and taking into consideration the access requirements is also essential. If you have questions about this, you can always contact us before hiring and we can provide guidance for you.

Please note, the above diagram is to visualise approximate scale only. Actual designs and skip shape may vary.

What is a skip permit and do I need one?

If you're hiring a skip to be placed on either the road, a council pathway, grass verge or layby then you will require a permit from your local council.

Permits are not required for skips being placed on private land.

If a permit is necessary for your hire, we will arrange this for you.

What type of skip should I hire?

The type of skip you should hire will depend of what you need to dispose of. For typical households, this will be a general mixed waste skip as multiple items can be disposed of, including but not limited to:

  • Furniture
  • Carpet
  • Garden waste
  • Household junk
  • Dry waste, such as cardboard and paper
  • Plastic

Inert waste skips are more typical for construction companies and tradespeople as they are specifically for demolition and building waste (for example rubble, concrete, cement etc.) Inert waste differs from mixed waste in the fact that it can be reused in other construction projects

What are access requirements for hiring a skip?

It is important to make sure there is enough space for our skip lorry to access the place you want your skip to be, for example if access via the road or through a gate is narrow. This is because our larger HGV truck requires access wider than your standard car.

How can I load my skip?

It is up to you how you choose to load your skip once it is on site, however, it is important to be mindful that the final level load you reach is not above the specified line.

It is dangerous to stack a skip too high above the sidewalls, as this could cause a hazard for the driver of the truck when transporting- for example, items could fall out and cause damage to other road users or members of the public.

Skip nets are used as a safety precaution, however making sure you're loading the skip responsibly is essential.

Should I hire a skip?

Skip hire is a great solution for projects which require bulky waste. They are also convenient for a range of applications and take up a relatively small space.

Unlike standard 'man and van hire', you do not have to worry about weight restrictions or working within a specific timeframe in a day. Skip hire also allows for other materials, such as soil and rubble to be disposed of simply.

Waste bags are also a good option for slightly smaller projects. We offer one ton bags which can be filled with your waste material and then collected similarly to a skip, without the need for taking up your driveway or path.
